Length: 4 to 5 ft covers almost everything
This is the window where a dachshund can sniff, weave and investigate without you constantly reeling them in, and where you can still stop a low dog from wandering into a curb. Shorter than 4 ft and the walk becomes a negotiation. Longer than 5 ft on a sidewalk and you spend the walk gathering slack.
