The Dachshund Fit Guide
Long back, deep chest, short legs — dachshunds are built like no other dog, and generic size charts don't work on that shape. Three measurements do. Here's how to take them in about 90 seconds.
Step one: measure — standing, never lying down
You'll need a soft measuring tape. Snug but never tight — you should always be able to slip two fingers underneath. A dachshund lying down measures like an entirely different dog, so: four feet on the floor, weight even, then measure.
1. Chest girth — the one that matters most
Wrap the tape around the deepest part of the chest, about an inch behind the front legs. This is the measurement most people skip, and the one that decides comfort.
2. Neck
Measure where the harness actually sits — lower than a collar, down at the base of the neck near the breastbone. Measuring up at the collar line is the easiest way to end up with the wrong size.
3. Back length
Base of the neck to the base of the tail. Not every product needs it, but keep it on file — you'll want it for coats and carriers.
Long-haired dachshund? Measure against the body, not the coat, or you'll size up by mistake.

“Typically fits” is a starting point, not a promise. Mini vs. standard doesn't reliably predict size — chest depth varies more between individual dachshunds than between the two types. Go by the tape, not the label on your dog.
The two-finger check
Once the harness is on and buckled, slide two fingers flat under every strap — neck and chest.
- Can't fit two fingers? Too tight — loosen or size up.
- Room for four? Too loose — a determined doxie will reverse straight out of it.
- Two fingers, snug? That's the fit.
Between sizes?
Still growing? Size up — the adjustable straps will keep pace, and re-measure every 3–4 weeks until about a year old. Fully grown and stuck between sizes? Size up there too, and send us the numbers if you'd like a second opinion.
